The shooter was reported to have been “neutralised” by police. It was unclear whether the death toll of five people included the shooter.

The Louisville Metro Police Department had earlier warned people to stay away from the area.

Witnesses who left the bank building told local TV station WHAS-TV that they heard gunfire inside the building.

“I was at the stoplight, and the first thing that I saw – there was a guy across the street at the intersection and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel,” one eyewitness told WDRB, another local station.

In a tweet, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he was heading to the scene. “Please pray for all of the families impacted and for the city of Louisville,” he said.

The shooting happened in a building on East Main Street that houses the Old National Bank not far from the Louisville Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.
